A garage door spring rarely fails without warning. Most breaks happen after weeks or months of small signs that get ignored. Here are the five warning signs we see most often on service calls across Los Angeles — catching them early can save you an emergency repair (and keep the door from slamming down unexpectedly).
1. A Loud Bang From the Garage
If you heard a single loud bang at some point — even days ago — and the door has felt different since, that was likely the spring snapping. A broken spring often still allows the door to open and close on the opener, but with much more strain on the cables and opener motor. Keep using the door with a broken spring and you risk a cable snapping too, which is a more dangerous, more expensive fix.
2. The Door Feels Heavy or Uneven When Opened by Hand
Disconnect the opener (pull the red release cord) and lift the door manually. It should feel light and balanced, staying roughly in place when lifted halfway. If it feels heavy, drops on its own, or one side lifts easier than the other, the spring tension is off — a sign of a weakening or already-broken spring.
3. Visible Gap in the Spring
Torsion springs sit above the door on a metal bar. A broken one will usually show a clear 1–2 inch gap in the coil. This is the most obvious sign, but only visible if you know where to look and the door is closed. Never attempt to inspect or touch a torsion spring closely — it’s under extreme tension.
4. The Opener Struggles or Reverses Mid-Close
Openers are designed to assist a properly balanced door, not lift the full weight on their own. If your opener strains, makes a grinding noise, or the door reverses partway through closing, the spring is likely no longer carrying its share of the load.
5. Cables Look Loose or Frayed
Cables and springs work together. A weakening spring puts extra strain on the cables, which can start to fray or come loose from the drum. Frayed cables paired with any of the signs above means a repair is overdue.
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
Stop using the door and call a professional. Springs are dangerous to replace without the right tools and training — the tension stored in a torsion spring can cause serious injury. See our typical spring replacement costs or call us at 818-747-7282 for a same-day quote.
